Mini excavators are hard on rubber tracks. Tight job sites, curb hopping, spinning in place, and constant reversing all wear the undercarriage faster than most owners expect. When the tracks start chunking or the sprocket teeth get sharp, it is time to price the repair. Here is what it costs in 2026.

Rubber Track Replacement Cost

Rubber tracks are the most common undercarriage expense on a mini excavator. A full set (both sides) costs $1,200-$3,800 installed, depending on machine size and brand. Larger minis at the top of the class run more than compact minis used in landscaping.

Track replacement is straightforward: 2-4 hours of shop time to break down, press on, and tension the new tracks. Most mini excavator dealers can turn it around in a day. If you have access to a press and the skill, DIY track replacement saves $300-$600 in labor on a small mini.

Sprocket Replacement Cost

Sprockets drive the tracks. They wear faster than most owners expect because they work with the track at every revolution. The teeth get sharp before they get short. When the sprocket is sharp, the track wears faster on the drive lug side. Replacing worn sprockets at the same time as tracks is almost always the right call, especially if the sprocket is over 50% worn.

Bottom Roller and Top Roller (Carrier Roller) Replacement Cost

Bottom rollers (track rollers) guide the track along the bottom of the frame. Top rollers (carrier rollers) support the track on the upper run. Mini excavators typically have 3-5 bottom rollers per side and 1-2 carrier rollers per side depending on track gauge and machine length.

Rollers fail from worn seals that allow oil to escape, leading to metal-on-metal contact. You will hear a squeaking or grinding noise from the bottom of the machine before a roller fails completely. OEM vs. Aftermarket: Which to Choose

OEM tracks from Kubota, Bobcat, Cat, and Deere dealers cost 15-25% more than quality aftermarket alternatives. For most mini excavators used in residential landscaping, utility work, or light construction, quality aftermarket tracks from established suppliers perform well and carry a 12-month warranty.

Where OEM parts make more sense: machines under manufacturer warranty, machines running in extreme conditions (rocky demolition work, hard-surface crawling), and any situation where the machine goes back to the dealer for warranty service and you want to avoid questions about parts.

For sprockets and rollers, the OEM vs. aftermarket decision is similar. Kubota and Takeuchi OEM rollers are more expensive but carry better seal specs for their own machines. Cat and Deere use proven aftermarket suppliers for their own service parts, so the "aftermarket" distinction matters less there.

When Does the Repair Make Sense?

Before approving a large undercarriage job, check what the machine is worth. If the repair is more than 30-40% of current market value on a machine that has other deferred maintenance, the numbers may favor a replacement instead.

A 2020 Kubota KX040-4 in good condition is worth roughly $42,000-$58,000 depending on hours and attachments. A $2,500 track and sprocket job is under 6% of machine value. That is always worth doing on an otherwise clean machine.

A $6,500 full undercarriage package on the same machine is 11-15% of value. Still worth it if the engine, hydraulics, and cab are in good shape. If the machine needs hydraulic work on top of the undercarriage, get both numbers and compare the combined repair cost to the market value of a clean replacement before you commit.
