These machines run 3-cylinder diesel engines that are reliable under normal conditions, but they will need major work eventually, especially on machines past 4,000 to 5,000 hours. Compact excavators (1 to 8 ton, roughly 10,000 to 17,000 lb operating weight) run smaller 3-cylinder diesel engines than full-size machines. Engine repair costs are lower than large excavators but still significant relative to the machine's value.

  • Cat 302.7/305 CR (Perkins 403/404, 3-cyl): Top-end $3,500-$6,500. In-frame $6,500-$10,500. Reman $9,000-$15,000. Cat's compact excavators use Perkins engines in the small classes. Perkins parts are supported by both Cat dealers and independent Perkins distributors.
  • Kubota KX040-4 (Kubota V2203-M, 4-cyl): Top-end $3,500-$6,000. In-frame $6,500-$10,000. Reman $9,000-$14,500. The V2203-M is a workhorse engine with strong parts and reman support. Cost is slightly higher than the D1803 due to the extra cylinder.
  • John Deere 35G/85G (Yanmar 3TNV88C): Top-end $3,200-$6,000. In-frame $5,800-$10,000. Reman $8,500-$14,000. Yanmar's TNV88 family is used across multiple brands and has good independent rebuilder support outside the dealer network.
  • Takeuchi TB260/TB290 (Yanmar 3TNV88C / Kubota V2607): Top-end $3,000-$6,000. In-frame $5,500-$10,500. Reman $8,000-$15,000. Takeuchi uses Yanmar and Kubota engines depending on model and year. Both are well-supported.

Top-End vs. In-Frame vs. Reman: Which Makes Sense?

The right repair scope depends on why the engine needs work and how many hours are on it.

Top-end overhaul is the right call when the head or valve train is the primary failure, the block and crank are in good shape, and hours are under 4,000. You replace what failed and inspect what's downstream. Cost is lowest; downtime is shortest.

In-frame rebuild makes sense at 4,000 to 6,000 hours when the engine is burning oil, losing compression across multiple cylinders, or has low oil pressure indicating bearing wear. You are rebuilding the bottom end while the engine stays in the machine. Parts cost more, labor hours are higher, but you get a machine that should run another 3,000 to 4,000 hours before the next intervention.

Reman long block swap is the fastest route back to production if you have a good supplier and the machine justifies it. Pull the old engine, bolt in the reman unit, carry-over the ancillaries. Done in 2 to 3 days versus 5 to 8 for an in-frame. Cost is higher than in-frame but downtime is lower.

Does the Repair Make Sense?

A 2019 Bobcat E35 in good condition is worth roughly $35,000 to $45,000. A $7,000 top-end overhaul is about 15 to 20 percent of that value. It is almost always worth doing if the rest of the machine is solid.

The math is harder on a 2013 machine at 6,000 hours with worn rubber tracks, a tired bucket, and hydraulic cylinders due for seals. Know the machine's current value before approving major engine work.
